Health and Injury Risks of Being a Cleaner

This article could be called “Confessions of a Cleaner”, for I have braved some scary situations in my job as a card-carrying cleaner on the streets of Sydney. Well, not actually on the streets, more in the offices, factories and retail outlets spread over this vast metropolis. Some of you might, already, be questioning my bone fides as a cleaner because of my eloquence. Thinking that most cleaners are new migrants, more fluent in Turkish or Chinese. Well, smarty pants there are plenty of students forced to make a buck polishing hospital floors and spraying Windex in a non-stop stream across the reflective surfaces of their lives. So, what are the health and injury risks of being a cleaner?

Health and Injury Risks of Being a Cleaner

My first big slip up was at Canterbury Hospital, when I went arse over tit whilst doing the hallways in the women’s ward. Luckily most of the ladies were asleep and I only bruised my coccyx, but my pride was seriously dented. The thing about cleaning is that you are usually doing it while most people are asleep and it can be hard to maintain focus through those wee hours. At least if you have a fall whilst cleaning a hospital you do not have far to go to seek help. My worst injury was, actually, incurred when I was cleaning Sydney’s top night spot, at the time, Jamison Street. Here I was engulfed by a giant rubber floormat from behind the bar, which was soaked in so much old beer and spilt alcohol that I nearly died of toxic poisoning. My partner, commented on my body odour for weeks after that cleaning job. My skin was never the same after that intimate roll with that beer mat.

Serious injuries worthy of hiring a compensation lawyer in this day and age, but back then we were encouraged to grin and bear it. It reminds me of the time that I was cleaning a brothel in Surry Hills and found an insertable sex aid that had obviously been left out after a night’s action. I let that sucker have it with the Spray’N’Wipe until it was running with foam. Cleaners are at risk from picking up infections and diseases from stuff like this every day of the week. Vigilance is the only weapon we have in our arsenal, to keep us safe from nasties and accidents. I thank my genes for staying healthy in the face of gunk and goop everywhere. These days, I try to stay on my feet more often than not and avoid the dodgy night time jobs. They say that cleanliness is next to Godliness, well, let me tell you my Bishop Pell story….

Empowering People with Disability Through Work

It is one of the fundamental truths, people are empowered through having a job and contributing to something larger than themselves. Being able to provide for yourself, and, perhaps, for a family as well, raises self-esteem. It is no different for those with a disability, if they can get a job, it lifts them in all respects. Doing a good job, giving it your best and being affirmed for a job well done enriches the soul somehow. No matter what the situation, from the lowliest position to the highest in the land, we all appreciate praise well apportioned.

Empowering People with Disability Through Work

Unfortunately, many people with disabilities find it hard to get gainful employment. It seems like many employers and those charged with employing on behalf of companies and businesses will not give individuals with a disability a chance to prove themselves. Diversity in the workplace, often, does not extend to those with a disability. The people in charge, it seems, are seeing the disability rather than the person. Many people are afraid of people who appear differently. They do not want to be embarrassed or possibly cause offence, so, they shut these people out.

This is a great shame, really, because diversity enriches organisations and the individuals within these organisations. Getting over a bit of discomfort can result in powerful new relationships being forged that benefit everyone involved. Disabled work and activities can flourish inside supportive businesses. Productivity does not necessarily need to suffer because employers are employing people with disabilities. A bit of creativity can adapt roles to people, rather than always adapting people to roles. Whatever the disability, and there are a wide range of disabilities, we all need to open up to diversity in the workplace.

The positives far outweigh the negatives for both employer and employee. Your customers may see your business in a new light, respecting your maturity and compassionate workplace policies. Your staff can find themselves growing as human beings, as they realise many of the prejudices they held toward people with disability were unfounded and mistaken. If you don’t know anyone with a disability, how can you make judgements about them? Disabilities do not define the individual, they may enrich that person through their journey with their particular disability. Diversity makes us all better and stretches our conception of what it means to be human. I challenge more Sydney and Australian employers to open their hearts, minds and wallets by hiring more individuals who may have a disability.

Professional Cleaning of Horse Racing Stables

It is always important to keep your workplace safe to create a good working environment which calls for professional cleaning services that is often employed today a several industries including horse racing. With that being said, no such thing has existed before as usually the low-paid stable-hands would do all the cleaning. But what aspects would need to be cleaned? Obviously bacterial build-up from horse dung is a problem but what else has the need to be thoroughly cleaned in a timely manner?

Horses are prone to develop sickness and injuries especially when the stables that are provided to them are not in top condition. This in turn, can affect their overall performance particularly the ones that are involved in races. As such, it important for owners to make to provide care, maintenance and as well as repairs with their respective stables. One area in particular that is often overlooked is the stalls. Porous wood and concrete are often common materials that are used with the creation of these stalls and they can hide as well as trap pathogens that cause infectious diseases.

If you don’t have a keen eye in spotting the development of these pathogens, your horses become exposed directly to these bacteria causing them serious harm in the process. Disinfecting these stalls is vital and should be done on a regular basis. With that being said, there are different types of disinfectants that are available that can be used to clean these stalls and this might confuse the ones that are not familiar to them. Professional cleaning services however, are able to spot areas in your stall that need immediate attention as well as help their clients find the right formula to use as disinfectants. All of these activities are made in an effort to create champion racehorses that are befitting of their respective titles.

Another area that is noteworthy of attention is with their manure. Manure management is something that should never be delayed or taken for granted especially since a lot of disease causing organisms hides behind in faeces and stall bedding. Manure management along with disinfecting stalls work hand in hand together in making your stable a great place for your horses to stay. It is good to hear that professional cleaning services are able to do back the activities of their clients up which in turn helps save them a considerable amount of time and resources.

Aside from keeping your horses away from several diseases and bacteria, you need to make sure about the remove cobwebs that have accumulated over time as they are susceptible to burning. These are often found in hard to reach areas however, this does not prove any problem with professional cleaning services as they have the right tools and equipment for the job.

A healthy horse is a happy horse and this can affect their overall mood making them perform at their best. Be sure to provide your horse with clean and safe stables during their stay.

Eco-Friendly Cleaning is Health-Friendly Cleaning

Have you ever wondered about the strong stench of chemical cleaning products left by your household or office cleaner?

Is this healthy for you and your kids?

One of my friends always felt that her child developed auditory processing disorder because of an exposure to cleaning products when her daughter was just four days old.

Likewise in many medical clinics powerful cleaning agents are required.

This can turn these premises into overly-sanitised buildings from which all air and water leaving the building are heavily contaminated.

It was the case a few years back where a women’s health clinic in Brisbane was so focussed on cleanliness that they didn’t just poison their local waterways, they poisoned their staff with many staff taking ill because of over-exposure to strong cleaning chemicals.

Human allergies are also often triggered by cleaning chemicals. Its quite common nowadays for people to overuse detergent when washing their clothes and bed-sheets, leading to skin rashes and eczema which can not just take over the exposed areas of the skin, but gradually take over the entire body.

Cleaning Furniture – What Chemicals To Avoid

We take the extra effort in keeping our furniture in tip top shape. This is indeed quite true especially since these are the very first items guest will notice once they are inside your home. Furniture contributes greatly in making homes complete and furnished. For that matter, it is important to ensure that your furniture is in a relatively good condition upon its use. Homeowners today clean their furniture on a regular basis in an effort to always keep them looking new and fresh. With that being said, there are cleaning products homeowners should be wary about especially when dealing with wooden furniture. Let us look at what chemicals to avoid when cleaning such items.

A common ingredient found in most hand sanitizers is alcohol. It should be noted that alcohol will eat through color and topcoat on many leathers leaving a discolored area. The same can also be said when applied in wooden furniture. It will basically blister the wood and scar it for life.

Dish Soap when mixed with a mild solution of soap and water does not necessarily harm wood furniture. However, a concentrated bottle of dish soap can leave spots in the finish.

If you have that hard to remove dirt and grime on your furniture, you may be inclined to use abrasives or hard chemicals to clean them. With that being said, we do not advise the use of such chemicals which include ammonia, powdered all-purpose cleaner, Endust, Pledge, oil soap, or any type of wax or silicone base products on your furniture. In frequent cases, some homeowners use vinegar as a main component used to clean wooden furniture. However, it is best to test it first on a small, inconspicuous area of the wood just to be safe.

Avoid pouring cleaning products directly on your furniture. Chemicals and cleaning products that are applied generously in spots can absorb into wood, cause swelling and an uneven look over time. It is ideal to find and look for some soft cloth rags that are clean. Furthermore, make sure that these have not been used with other cleaning products that may damage the wood.

Cleaning aside, maintenance also plays a very important role in keeping your wooden furniture in a good working condition. You may want to check if your furniture has cracks or any related condition as they may need repaired as soon as possible. You can also maintain quality of wooden furniture by keeping them out of direct sunlight or at least try to minimise exposure. Furthermore, regular dusting is advised which helps avoid dirt buildup.

The time may come in which your furniture may need to be replaced in the near future. For the meantime, it is best to care for your furniture for them to last a fair amount of time. It is good to hear that finding furniture is made easy with online stores available at any given time. You can easily replace them individually or get a furniture set and replace them as a whole.
